My father was a doctor. When he first fell ill, I had been working in healthcare for more than a decade. I understood the healthcare system, I knew the language, I was surrounded by healthcare professionals.
And yet, I was totally lost.
There was the pain of seeing my dad suffer in the years before his passing. There were medical questions I couldn’t get answers to; legal paperwork I didn’t have; insurance coverage I didn’t understand; new responsibilities I wasn’t ready for; family dynamics I didn’t expect; service providers I didn’t know how to find; financial issues I wasn’t prepared for; and a wife, young children, and a job for which I needed to be fully present. It felt like too much. It probably was.
There’s something in me that likes to figure out how to solve impossible problems. I thought- what would it be like if something existed to help – really help – a family like mine?
The answer is why Family First exists.
Family First’s promise: experienced, empathetic, expert help for families. Help that is available for no cost. Help that delivers answers to all of the questions, marshals all of the resources, takes work off the family’s shoulders, and helps that family be as present as possible for their loved one.
If you’re going to make a serious promise like this, you have to deliver. I focused, relentlessly, on finding people who were experienced leaders who had been there personally as caregivers and professionally in healthcare. People who would completely, fully, and deeply understand exactly what every family was facing, and knew exactly how to deliver solutions. People like this create a culture where our sole focus is on solving families’ problems.
It’s makes it a pleasure to share the story of Family First. People frequently ask questions, looking for a catch. Do you help with hospital discharges? Yes, we do. But do you help people enroll in Medicaid? Yes. Do you make sure the caregiver is taking care of themselves? Yes. The point is, Family First is here for you, here for your loved one, here for your family. We do whatever it takes to help – really help – you.
